Salvini insists obligatory vaccinations for children are “useless” and “dangerous” 

Italy’s far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said last Friday that the policy of obligatory vaccinations for children prior to going to school is “useless” and in many cases “dangerous.” Salvini announced that he will be reviewing legislation, allowing children in nurseries to avoid the 10 obligatory vaccines, giving parents a choice. Italian law currently does not allow children to progress from nurseries to public schools without undertaking the 10 vaccinations regime. Vaccinations cover diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox. The law was introduced by the former Democratic Party Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin, and has become a rallying point for the 5-Star Movement (M5S. Italy’s top immunologist Roberto Burioni Tweeted that the Interior Minister’s assertion is a “dangerous lie” and the ten vaccines regime is “neither useless nor harmful.”  Source

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has announced a joint venture with the Vatican to co-host a meeting next September on “migration, xenophobia, and politically motivated populism.” The WCC said it is partnering with the Vatican department for Promoting Integral Human Development in preparing the conference to be held September 17-20 as part of ongoing work toward “peace-building and migration.” The General of the WCC, Rev. Olav Fykse Tveit, said the meeting would be a “very useful and significant workshop to dig a bit deeper” into the problems of xenophobia as an expression of populism, as well as its links to racism, conflict, and violence in countries around the world. Italy, France tensions spiral over rejected migrant ship

Rome (AFP) - Italy postponed high-level talks with France on Wednesday after Paris branded Rome irresponsible for refusing to take in a migrant rescue ship. Italy's new economy minister postponed a meeting with his French counterpart in Paris as their countries traded barbs over the treatment of more than 600 migrants rescued off the Libyan coast at the weekend. The migrants were stranded on the Aquarius vessel until Spain said the ship could land at its port of Valencia. It is expected to arrive there later this week. French President Emmanuel Macron accused Italy's new populist government of "cynicism and irresponsibility" for closing its ports to the 629 migrants. Rome called his comments "unacceptable" and summoned France's ambassador on Wednesday. "Such statements are undermining relations between Italy and France," Italy's foreign ministry said in a statement. Source

Italy's Matteo Salvini shuts ports to migrant rescue ship

A rescue ship carrying 629 migrants is stranded in the Mediterranean after Italy's new interior minister refused permission for it to dock. Matteo Salvini, leader of the right-wing League party, promised during Italy's recent general election to take a tough stance against migration. He says Malta should accept the Aquarius, but it refused, arguing that it falls under Italy's jurisdiction. Italy is the main entry for migrants crossing from North Africa to Europe. German charity SOS Méditerranée says the ship has been instructed by the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre to stand by in its current position, 35 nautical miles (65km) from Italy and 27 nautical miles from Malta. It says the migrants, many of whom are children, were picked up in six different rescue operations off Libya's coast. Meanwhile, Mr Salvini says a second ship has rescued hundreds more migrants near Libya and is heading for Italy. "Italy has stopped bowing its head to obey, this time there are those who say NO," he tweeted in response. Source
